River Rock
Smooth, rounded river rock in 1–3 and 3–6 inch sizes for beds and drainage
Short answer
Rounded river rock in 1–3 inch and 3–6 inch sizes, used for dry creek beds, drainage swales, downspout aprons and low-maintenance stone beds. Sold in bulk by the yard for pickup or delivery.
River rock is tumbled smooth, so it reads soft and natural rather than industrial. Because the stones are rounded they don't lock together — which is exactly why water moves through them so freely.
Lay landscape fabric underneath to keep the stone from disappearing into soil, and use 2–3 inches of depth for a bed, more for a working drainage channel.

Frequently asked
- Does river rock need landscape fabric?
- Yes, in beds. Fabric keeps the stone from sinking and cuts weed growth dramatically.
- River rock or mulch?
- Stone never needs replacing but holds heat and adds no organic matter. Mulch feeds soil but has to be refreshed each year.
